PRIVATE EQUITY / TV PLATFORMS
A Reality Check: Platform Capabilities emerged as the Most Critical Metric

Assisting a private equity firm decipher product capabilities of key investment targets in the TV platforms and Value-added Services (VAS) space.
Our Client’s Problem
Our client, a private equity firm, was at a crossroads. Keen on investing in the flourishing TV platforms and VAS space, they were overwhelmed by the myriad of companies and their respective product offerings. In an industry where every player claims superiority, the challenge was to determine which companies truly had cutting-edge products aligned with the future of TV platforms and VAS.
Our Brief
The client's primary objective was to gain a comprehensive understanding of key players' product capabilities. This knowledge would allow them to discern which companies were truly at the forefront, thereby optimizing their investment strategy. They were particularly interested in:
-
Product features and scalability
-
Integration capabilities with existing TV platforms
-
User experience and interface design
-
Revenue models and cost structures of these VAS products
-
Potential for innovation and growth in the VAS space
Our Method
At 4D, our pillars of success encompass Depth, Transparency, Verifiability, and Innovation. To cater to this project's bespoke requirements, we conducted comprehensive product due diligence of 10 TV platform vendors and 6 VAS vendors. We crafted a detailed "Consultant Assessment Framework" which involved breaking down product attributes for each vendor, where we got down the rabbit hole to understand the real capabilities and gap that their solutions had.
Confidentiality was paramount. Ensuring both our client's and the consultants' anonymity was crucial. By engaging multiple consultants per company and ensuring the client's involvement in the selection process, we gained a deep understanding and evaluation of the product capabilities of solutions offered by target companies.
Client Outcomes
We discovered a significant disparity in the claimed versus actual capabilities of many VAS providers. While several vendors touted innovative features, only a few had truly scalable solutions and seamless integration capabilities.
The revenue models and cost structures were particularly varied, with some companies focusing on subscription models while others leaned towards pay-per-use. A major revelation was that many companies, despite their claims, were not optimally positioned to capitalize on the future innovations in the VAS domain.
Moreover, our deep dive revealed that the user experience was often sacrificed in the race for feature integration, leading to complex and less user-friendly interfaces. The potential for growth was often overstated, with many companies lacking a clear roadmap for evolution in the ever-changing TV platforms and VAS landscape.
Armed with these insights, our client was able to refine their investment strategy. They narrowed down their list, focusing on companies that truly demonstrated innovative prowess, scalability, and a keen understanding of the future landscape of TV platforms and VAS.
The final outcome was a strategic investment in a domain-leading company that, thanks to our rigorous vetting, promises not only returns but also a vision for the future within the TV platforms and VAS space.
